High School Kick-Off Tournament, Coming March 4-6

PORTLAND, Oregon (February 21, 2011) – The Portland Athletic Club (PAC) is set to host the 5th Annual High School Kick-Off Tennis Tournament on March 4-6, 2011.  According to PAC's Anthony Blackburn, tournament founder and director, this is the largest pre-season tennis tournament in the Portland area.

As in the past, the tournament format will be limited to high school girls and boys singles only; no doubles.  There will be a consolation round, so that each player who enters is guaranteed at least two matches.  The entry deadline is Monday, February 28th.  Registration forms can be downloaded at www.portlandathleticclub.net/tennis_academy.asp.

As the largest pre-season tennis tournament in the Portland area, this event offers a great preview of the competition that coaches, players, and teams can expect during the upcoming high school tennis season.  Because this is a non-sanctioned USTA tournament, restrictions on coaching are waived. This means that players and coaches can communicate like they do in regular high school matches, which makes this tournament an outstanding pre-season warm-up.

“I started this tournament because I wanted to see a large, non-sanctioned USTA event that provided high school kids with an opportunity to play in a high-quality tournament without having to worry about their ranking or position on their high school line-up,” said Blackburn. “My hope is that these kids will receive constructive advice and competitive experience they can build on for a more rewarding high school tennis season.”
