Portland Athletic Club's Play for Japan Fundraiser a Recreational and Rewarding Event

The Raleigh Hills-based Portland Athletic Club (PAC) held a "Play for Japan" fundraiser, tennis social, and potluck luncheon on Wednesday, March 23, to raise money for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. The event combined the love of tennis with the desire to help a country in need. The fundraiser brought over 40 people to the club and raised over $1,500 for Mercy Corps!

During the fundraiser, tennis drills and games were played, T-shirts were sold, raffle tickets were purchased, and an auction was held, with all of the proceeds going directly to Mercy Corps. PAC tennis teaching professionals, Maureen Harwood (director of "Play for Japan") and Anthony Blackburn (also tennis professional at Nike World Headquarters), volunteered their time to run on-court tennis activities for the participants. As it was a potluck, many players brought delicious Japanese dishes to share with everyone.

Some of the participants even had their 15 seconds of fame! KPTV Fox Channel 12 News shot a quick 30 second clip of the event, which aired at 4:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. To view this video, go to http://www.kptv.com/local-video/index.html, then type in the Search box, "Tennis Players Hit Court for Fundraiser."

Harwood, Blackburn, and the rest of the Portland Athletic Club staff would like to thank all those who donated and attended this fundraiser to make the event such a success!

Johnson, Samkutty Clinch Boy’s and Girl’s Singles Titles in Kick-Off Tennis Tournament

PORTLAND, Oregon (March 9, 2011) – Alex Johnson and Madeline Samkutty, both 14, captured the Boy’s and Girl’s Singles titles in the High School Kick-Off Tennis Tournament, held at the Portland Athletic Club (PAC) last weekend, March 4-6.

In the Boy’s Finals, Johnson, a member of PAC, defeated fellow PAC member Jason Nguyen, 17, in two sets.  On the girl’s side, Samkutty prevailed in a gripping three-set semifinal match against seventeen-year-old Jennifer Kearns en route to the finals, where she topped Arielle Bradford, 18.  Fifteen-year-old PAC member David Govshtein was the Boy’s Singles Consolation winner, while Christina Truong, a senior at Benson High School, took the Girl’s Singles Consolation round.

According to tournament coordinator, PAC’s Alyssa Morrison, it was a jam-packed three days of youth tennis with more than 50 high school players from all over the Portland and surrounding areas participating.  Since this was a non-sanctioned USTA event, coaching was allowed, and many took advantage of the opportunity.  As one of the largest pre-season tennis tournaments in the Portland area, this event offered a great preview of the competition that coaches, players, and teams can expect during the upcoming high school tennis season.

“I saw some real high caliber tennis matches this past weekend,” tournament coordinator Morrison said.  “I look forward to hearing a lot more about these kids as their high school tennis seasons unfold.”

Portland Tennis League's New "Aces" Division a "Smash" Hit

PORTLAND, Oregon (February 21, 2011) - The Portland Athletic Club, host of The Portland Tennis League (PTL) announces that the Winter Session of its first ever “Aces” League has been well received, attracting over 30 players.  This league, intended for males and females with a 4.0 or 4.5 NTRP skill rating, has become one of the winter’s most popular and competitive tennis groups, drawing players from all over the Portland, Beaverton, and Vancouver areas.

“We are already half-way through the Winter Session of the league, and we are still getting new sign-ups everyday,” said Alyssa Morrison, coordinator of the Portland Tennis League.  “I predict even higher numbers when we start up our Spring Session in early April.”

The PTL is designed to give players of all ages and skill levels an opportunity to play numerous matches in any event.  Using a round-robin format, participants get an opportunity to play a different opponent (and even team with different doubles partners) each week for eight solid weeks.

Registration is now open for the Spring Session of the Portland Tennis League.  For more information, visit the PTL website, www.portlandtennisleague.com, or call Alyssa Morrison at the Portland Athletic Club, 503-292-2649.

High School Kick-Off Tournament, Coming March 4-6

PORTLAND, Oregon (February 21, 2011) – The Portland Athletic Club (PAC) is set to host the 5th Annual High School Kick-Off Tennis Tournament on March 4-6, 2011.  According to PAC's Anthony Blackburn, tournament founder and director, this is the largest pre-season tennis tournament in the Portland area.

As in the past, the tournament format will be limited to high school girls and boys singles only; no doubles.  There will be a consolation round, so that each player who enters is guaranteed at least two matches.  The entry deadline is Monday, February 28th.  Registration forms can be downloaded at www.portlandathleticclub.net/tennis_academy.asp.

As the largest pre-season tennis tournament in the Portland area, this event offers a great preview of the competition that coaches, players, and teams can expect during the upcoming high school tennis season.  Because this is a non-sanctioned USTA tournament, restrictions on coaching are waived. This means that players and coaches can communicate like they do in regular high school matches, which makes this tournament an outstanding pre-season warm-up.

“I started this tournament because I wanted to see a large, non-sanctioned USTA event that provided high school kids with an opportunity to play in a high-quality tournament without having to worry about their ranking or position on their high school line-up,” said Blackburn. “My hope is that these kids will receive constructive advice and competitive experience they can build on for a more rewarding high school tennis season.”

For more information, visit the PAC website at www.portlandathleticclub.net/tennis_academy.asp, or call Alyssa Morrison or Anthony Blackburn at 503-292-2649.
